Fabric Jiu-Jitsu: The Weekend Ahead

Five IBJJF Opens fill the weekend, starting with Lisbon on Friday and finishing with Houston, Toronto and Curitiba on Sunday.

That adds up to 241 black belt entries, 162 in the gi and 79 in no-gi. Main Character Jiu-Jitsu 10 closes things out in Miami on Sunday.

Brackets are out for all five Opens. Registrations, brackets and rankings in this preview come from the IBJJF.

The Headliner: Lisbon International Open

The gi runs Friday and no-gi follows Saturday, with 54 black belts in the gi and 24 in no-gi.

The name to watch is Pawel Jaworski. The No. 1 man in the no-gi ranking moves up from medium heavy to heavy on Saturday, where Matheus Paiva is his only opponent, so their match is the final. Our story on his move up has his titles.

Also in Lisbon:

  • Marcos Carrozzino (super heavy, gi and no-gi): 2024 No-Gi world champion. In no-gi, Luuk van Nieuwamerongen is his only opponent, so that match is the final.
  • Bruno Lima (gi super heavy): 2022 world bronze medalist at medium heavy, in the same four man bracket as Carrozzino.
  • Rose Walsh (no-gi middle): No. 14 in the women’s no-gi ranking, and the only woman in her division.

Prospect Watch: Rodrigo Dantas

Rodrigo Dantas leads the men’s purple belt gi ranking with 795 points, and he’s entered at ultra heavy in Curitiba, one of five in his division.

Points only come from podium finishes, so a total that big means a long run of medals across this season and the two before it.
